Ceiling outlets or floor outlets?
Most ducted systems sit in the roof space and blow air down through ceiling outlets. In some highset Taringa houses, the roof space is shallow or hard to reach under a steep iron roof, while there is plenty of room under the floor. In those cases, the indoor unit and ducts can sometimes go underneath, with outlets set into the floor. Floor outlets suit some rooms and furniture layouts better than others, so it is worth weighing both before deciding.
Zoning a highset house
A typical layout has bedrooms along one side and living areas at the back, sometimes with an enclosed verandah or sleepout. Zoning bedrooms separately from living areas lets you cool the sleeping side at night only. Enclosed verandahs are often lightly built and get hot, so they may need a larger outlet or their own zone.
Outdoor units on steep blocks
Taringa blocks can drop sharply from the street. The outdoor unit needs a stable, level base with room for airflow and servicing, and a position away from neighbours’ bedroom windows. Under a highset house is often the neatest spot, provided there is enough clearance and ventilation.
Units and townhouses
Ducted systems are less common in older unit blocks, where roof access and body corporate approval for outdoor units are the main limits. For a single unit, split systems are usually the practical choice.
