Zoning by level

In a two-level Red Hill home, the upper floor under the roof heats up first and the lower level stays cooler. Zoning upstairs and downstairs separately lets you cool bedrooms at night without running the living areas, and stops the system overcooling the lower floor while it works on the top. For split-level houses, we zone by how the rooms are actually used.

Low roof pitches and tight spaces

Some older Red Hill roofs have a low pitch or a skillion section over a later extension, leaving little room for an indoor unit and ducts. Before quoting, we inspect the roof space for headroom, access, framing and insulation. If part of the house cannot be reached with ducts, a split system for that room may be the more sensible answer, and we will tell you so.

Outdoor unit on a sloping block

A ducted outdoor unit is larger than a split system condenser and needs a stable, level base with clearance for airflow and servicing. On a Red Hill slope that may be a slab cut into the bank, a platform under the house or a side path, positioned away from bedroom windows on both sides of the fence.

• check existing ducts for damage, sagging and poor insulation
• re-zone if the house has been raised or extended
• resize the system to suit the current floor plan

• replace an old controller with a zone-capable one
