Roof space or under the floor?

Ducted systems need somewhere to hide the indoor unit and the ductwork. In a single-storey or upper-floor area with a reasonable roof space, the unit and ducts usually go above the ceiling, with outlets in each room. In a high-set Queenslander where the ground floor has been built in, the lower level may need its own ducting through a bulkhead or ceiling cavity. Low-pitched roofs and tight ceiling spaces limit what can fit, so we inspect the roof space before suggesting a layout.

Zoning for upstairs and downstairs

Heat rises, and on a Toowong hillside the top floor often catches the most sun. Zoning lets you send air only where it is needed: bedrooms at night, living areas during the day, a downstairs rumpus room only when someone is using it. A zoned system controlled room by room (or level by level) avoids cooling empty spaces. The return air grille location matters too, as a poorly placed return can leave one level stuffy no matter how the zones are set.

Replacing an older ducted system

Outdoor unit position and LPG

Many Toowong houses have narrow side setbacks. The outdoor unit needs airflow, service access and distance from bedroom windows next door. Where the house has LPG cylinders, the outdoor unit must sit outside the hazardous zone around the cylinder valves set by Resources Safety and Health Queensland.
